The Yiddish Policeman’s Union
The Yiddish Policeman’s Union by Michael Chabon
This is a murder mystery with a Yiddish twang, and wow can Chabon write! The story is a series of unexpected twists and turns and fascinating characters. The bleak Sitka landscape and weather factor in as true obstacles. I looked it up afterwards and found that the influx of Jews into Sitka, Alaska never actually happened, it was merely a suggestion by FDR as a possible way to give Jews a safe haven. The book reads like historical fiction, the people and town feel so real.
